What languages do you speak? Queens English? American English? Pidgin English? French? Portuguese? Latin? Mandarin? Japanese? Text speak? COBOL? Sign language?
 
What does it matter? What is language used for? To communicate and interact with others. Language is the key to the door to people, business, work, Interpreters provide access to the work and minds of others who cannot speak or communicate in the language of others.
 
Why learn a new language? Medical research has shown that learning a new language improves your brain function.... At any age. It's a way to increase your exposure, enabling you to learn about other cultures as you read and travel. You learn more about the context of the language. It can help you more easily emigrate to other communities and become well integrated. A new language might just be the tool you need to study a subject in a country with some specialist knowledge.
 
What languages should you learn now? If it is just to keep your brain active, then any language will do. If it is to give yourself an edge in a career or business, then you need to follow the trends. Where are the major or significant business connections emerging? What are sources that need to be tapped? There are so many ways to learn a language now, the traditional methods of going to a class or school; immersion, by living in the culture and environment; using tapes or CDs or with moves in technology there are loads of apps that make it simple. Ed Cooke's "Memrise" is just one example.
 
In the last decade an increasing number of students and business people have taken up the study of Mandarin, Japanese, Cantonese, Korean, Arabic, Urdu.... The language you speak will influence the places that you go, where you are welcome and the levels at which you can interact effectively .
